Biggest post in WiiHackr history?

Since this is probably gonna be a pretty big post, I’m just gonna get right to it.

First off, the RiiConnect24 News Channel Beta has been released. To get this beta, all you need to do is make sure your IOS 31 is patched using the patcher available at riiconnect24.net and then launch the News Channel like normal. At the moment though due to a last minute issue that snuck in, the channel only displays news from a few days before June 28, 2016, but hey, it’s working so that’s good!

Next on our list is that on Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii, if you are setup to RiiConnect24’s DNS, you can now receive DLC without any extra work. This is good for those people who play the game which unfortunately, I do not. This game also supports Wiimmfi for online play.

Crashing on, we have a huge announcement for WiiHackr that I personally am really excited about. The developers of RiiConnect24 are planning to make a secondary News Channel (currently known as the Gaming Channel) which will include Gaming/Hacking news and similar stuff. The best part is, WiiHackr itself, is gonna be in this channel to view our latest posts! Awesome, isn’t it? Also due to this, I will no longer be using my signoff of ~MineMasterHD so it fits in on the channel.

Our final announcement for today is kind of delayed but still an announcement. It’s a small one but the Forecast Channel now has a custom message when you launch it. Instead of the old “The Forecast Channel Services have been discontinued”, you get a message saying “The Forecast Channel services will be back soon. Thank you for using RiiConnect24”. Pretty neat I guess that they can post custom errors.

Building the ultimate gaming console/More RiiConnect24 stuff

I promised more content, didn’t I? Here you go.

It’s time to build the ultimate gaming console. We will use features from modern day consoles like the Xbox and the PlayStation as well as ancient consoles like the Wii or maybe even the GameCube.

So this is what I would have in the ultimate gaming console:

  • The slimness of the Xbox One S
  • The hacking aspect of the Wii
  • The compact controllers of the Wii
  • The 4K video of the Xbox One S
  • The media center aspect of the Xbox One
  • The internal power supply on the PS4
  • The easy to open up for servicing part of the Wii
  • The added camera on the controller on the Wii U
  • The processing power of the Xbox One S

That’s all I can think of right now!

Larsen V. (RC24 Dev) has stated that when the Everybody Votes Channel is released, people will be able to volunteer to help out with moderating the polls sent in by users.

I will most likely be one of those volunteers.

See ya!

RiiConnect24 Announcement!!!

I’m sorry guys. It’s been a month since the last post. I know I said I would be more active last month, but I’ve been really busy as of late. But now that school is out, expect a lot more content now. I promise this time.

Now for the big headline: RiiConnect24 has a huge announcement!

So earlier today I was on the RC24 skype chat talking. Then, one of the developers (Larsen V.) started talking and said that they’re almost done with the news channel and gave a release date they hope to meet which is..(*drumroll please*) June 28th, 2016! This is great news considering it’s been around maybe 8 months since this project started. But still, take it with a big grain of salt. They also said they plan to work on the Forecast Channel after they are done with the News channel.

See ya soon!

WiiHackr (and RiiConnect24) isn’t dead.

Hi guys! I know it’s been a while since my last post, but that’s because not much has been going on with homebrew lately. But I assure you, WiiHackr is still alive. So is RiiConnect24. In fact, I had a conversation with Larsen V. (One of the developers) on Skype and a chat with the RC24 community on the Skype chat. If you want the Skype chat link, here it is: https://join.skype.com/CQ4M02rplXWy You can chat with most of the developers there.

Keep hacking!

Opinion article: The rise of RiiConnect24 and its effect on the Wii’s future

Welcome to this opinion article. Opinion articles will be longer articles where I share my opinion about a certain topic. Expect to see more of these in the future. I am open to constructive criticism about these types of articles.

The Nintendo Wii has been abandoned by Nintendo. We know that because of a few reasons.
1: Nintendo shut down WiiConnect24 and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
2: Nintendo no longer makes Wii games.
3: Production of the Wii and the Wii Family Edition have stopped.
4: On Nintendo’s website, there is no longer a section for Wii.
From these reasons, it is clear the Wii is dead. Or so we think.
Nintendo may have abandoned the Wii, but that doesn’t stop people who use homebrew.
Thanks to some awesome developers, WiiConnect24 is no longer dead. In fact, it’s all but dead.
RiiConnect24 has been available for homebrew users for a while now and since WiiConnect24 was one of the main things of the Wii and its huge population back in the day, RiiConnect24 has basically just revived the Wii.
Most of the WiiConnect24 channels will come back with RiiConnect24 in the same form as they were before the shutdown. This could have a huge impact on the future of the Wii. I think with RiiConnect24, more people will buy a Wii off eBay or another site that still sells them since most people left the Wii after WiiConnect24 was shut down. This means Nintendo could lose some revenue right here with people not buying their new products. Who knows? Maybe Nintendo will lose so much revenue that they will listen to our protests and bring WiiConnect24 back. I personally loved WC24 and I was more than furious when it was shutdown, mainly because I absolutely love the Everybody Votes Channel and the Check Mii Out Channel.

Really, Nintendo really doesn’t have much of a choice here. The Wii was a product that actually made them go up in the stock market. After they discontinued Wii, their stock prices just plummeted. If they started producing Wii consoles again and made them available for sale, that is all they would have to do. Maybe Nintendo could even start a partnership with the developers of RiiConnect24 where Nintendo gives them the proper RSA Keys to make developing RiiConnect24 a lot easier, and Nintendo would never have to worry about Wii software again, just the hardware they had to produce.

I doubt this would happen, but maybe they thank people that have a Wii currently in working form for sticking around and maybe make a new Wii with improved specs (HDMI Support?) and exchange it with existing Wii Consoles as a thank you gift.

Basically they should hand over Wii Software Development to the homebrew community and then just make and sell the hardware. It means the cost overall for the Wii would go down as Nintendo wouldn’t need to hire software developers for the Wii as the community would manage that.

Hmm, now that I think of it, I might start a petition to bring these ideas to life!

That’s it for now!

BootMii and newer Wiis

So you wanna know about BootMii and newer Wiis and how they don’t mix? Well, here I go.

Why don’t we take a look at the boot process. It goes somewhat like this

boot0 -> boot1 -> boot2 -> Wii Menu

So as you can see there are many steps before the actual Wii Menu is loaded. Now boot0 cannot be modified at all, boot1 (which loads boot2) can be changed, but has read-only properties. Now because boot1 loads boot2, it will also check if boot2 has a proper signature and if it doesn’t, the Wii will fail to boot. However, on older Wiis, there was a bug in boot1 which allowed boot2 code to be replaced with BootMii code. Nintendo was aware of this bug before the bug was found by the community though. So people installed BootMii as boot2 and got the best brick protection because even if the system menu failed, boot2 launches before the system menu so they would be fine. However, as I said previously, Nintendo was aware of the bug and they released a new model of the Wii that fixes the bug so on those Wiis, without the right RSA keys, BootMii/boot2 cannot be installed. On these Wiis, you can only install BootMii as an IOS, which gives you absolutely no brick protection alone.

Welcome to WiiHackr!

Welcome to WiiHackr, a site dedicated to all things related to Wii homebrew!

Here you will find plenty of guides all handmade by me with the help of a few people on the internet.

I’d like to say that YOU take all responsibility if you brick your Wii by following my guide. Though I really doubt bricking since I tried this on my own Wii and it works perfectly.

I really hate that I have to have an LU64+ Wii to hack with. It means I can’t have BootMii as boot2 because boot1 isn’t vulnerable. Can someone please donate to me a Wii that isn’t LU64+ Wii? (Jk, but I still really would love to have one…)

Anyway, that’s it for now. See ya next post!
